Norma Winstone is a veteran of the cross-Channel jazz scene since the late 1960s. We remember her as a member of the admirable Azimuth trio, together with Anglo-Canadian trumpeter and flugelhorn player Kenny Wheeler and pianist John Taylor, but also alongside Mike Westbrook, Mike Gibbs, John Surman and other leading exponents of British jazz. He has also collaborated with the American pianist Fred Hersh and the Italian Glauco Venier.
Kit Downes is one of the most interesting pianists and organists of the latest generation, not only in Europe. He has already made several recordings for ECM (Obsidian, Dreamlife of Debris and Vermillion) and has been honoured with a BBC Jazz Award, as well as nominations for the Mercury Music Awards.
Together, Norma Winstone and Kit Downes recorded the Oupost of Dreams album for ECM, which features compositions by Carla Bley, Ralph Towner, John Taylor and signature pieces by both artists. Theirs is an intimate but nuanced jazz, the result of the encounter between two artists with a marked sensitivity, who feed off each other's listening, resulting in a very refined dialogue.
