Leo Genovese anticipates his participation in Joe Lovano's evening project on Miles Davis and John Coltrane with a piano solo that promises to be one of the most surprising events of Bergamo Jazz 2026. Indeed, the Argentinean pianist embodies a way of making music that combines a profound knowledge of the jazz tradition with innovative impulses that transcend genres. His extensive CV is exemplary in this sense. Born in 1979 in Venado Tuerto, he studied classical music at the University of Rosario and in 2001 moved to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he graduated in 2003. Two years later he released his first album as a leader, Haiku II, for the Spanish label Fresh Sound. Since then, there has been a succession of recordings and prestigious collaborations, most notably with double bass player and singer Esperanza Spalding. In 2017, with Spalding herself and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, Lo Genovese joined Wayne Shorter on stage at the Detroit Jazz Festival: that concert would later be documented on a Candid album, winning a Grammy for the track “Endangered Species” for Best Improvised Jazz Solo.
Another significant milestone was joining Mars Volta, a rock band that has made sonic eclecticism its banner. But one of the pianist’s specialities is solo performances, as evidenced by the albums Solo Piano en Rosario from 2022 and Forward from 2024, significant examples of a stylistic eclecticism that goes from the elaboration of standards to explorations full of happy intuitions.
