Relevé is one of the many projects devised by Piedmontese violinist Anaïs Drago, a prodigious talent capable of expressing herself fully in multiple contexts, imprinting her strong personality as an instrumentalist and performer everywhere. The name of the group, born in 2023 as an original project of the WeStart production centre in Novara, underlines the momentum and propulsive drive that pervades the music and concerts of the trio, which includes clarinettist Federico Calcagno and drummer and percussionist Max Trabucco, who are well tuned in to the leader's wavelength. Relevé is also the title of the album recorded live in January 2024 at the Münster Jazz Festival in Germany and at the Area Sismica in Forlì. Each of the eight compositions on the album emphasises the union of three instruments, against a backdrop of unusual sounds: the music is at times hypnotic, at times experimental, moving between jazz, rock and folklore, with a careful use of the timbre palette and extended techniques that reflect the languages of contemporary music.
The leitmotif of Relevé is the plastic dimension that music takes on, capable of bouncing off the listener, calling him or her to movement, through an inescapable impulse to move the body in space. In classical dance, in fact, relevé means to lift up, to overcome the force of gravity; giving the sensation of lightness. «Relevé is something unstably danceable», says Anaïs Drago, «Music, as well as dance, is the art that best organises time and space».
