VIRGINIA SUTERA

Virginia Sutera violin

Live-action soundtrack from the film Gräfin Küchenfee (The scullery maid turned countess) by Rudolf Biebrach, Germany, 1918, 46’, bn

Gräfin Küchenfee is a comedy starring actress Henny Porten, who is called upon to play two characters: a countess and her cook. This double role emphasises Porten's comic skills, especially in the scenes in which she imitates herself as Karoline in the role of the countess. The comic effect is multiplied: the scullery maid amuses herself by imitating the already hysterical ways of the mistress, and Porten seems to enjoy himself endlessly playing the two characters. The device of swapping identities, combined with the witty dialogue, makes for a lively and amusing comedy reminiscent of the films written by Henny's sister Rosa.
Her lifelong interest in the intersection of music and other arts makes Virginia Sutera one of the leading figures on today's improvised music scene. She graduated from the Conservatory of Milan with a thesis dedicated to improvisation, delving into the figure of the English composer Cornelius Cardew in The Great Learning. He created the Tuscany Music Revolution project and formed artistic partnerships with, among others, accordionist Sara Calvanelli, pianists Alberto Braida and Ermanno Novali.
